Air Canada expands Seoul and London services

Air Canada has officially announced that it is expanding its long haul foot print in Asia and UK from June 2016 as the carrier looks to fully capitalize on the major benefits the Boeing 787 fleet is bringing to the bottom line.

To begin with, AC will be launching new daily nonstop services from YYZ-Toronto to ICN-Seoul effective 17JUN16 using a B788. The schedule is as follows:

AC 061 Dep YYZ 1335 Arr ICN 1620+1
AC 062 Dep ICN 1500 Arr YYZ 1450

FYI in 2014, the demand (round trip) between YVR-ICN was 135,000 pax versus 105,000 for YYZ, 19,000 for YYC and 10,000 for YUL.

With regards to the UK, AC revealed the following adjustments for S16 season:

YYC/LHR - frequencies reduced from 11 weekly to daily nonstop using an A333

YEG/LHR - all 3 weekly flights suspended

YVR/LHR - frequencies increased from daily to double daily i.e. daily B773ER + daily B788

Analysis:

Adding a second daily YVR-LHR is a smart move in retaliation to the BA daily A380 product that is coming to YVR in S16 as passengers especially the higher yielding corporates prefer schedule flexibility majority of the time.

For Seoul, AC continues to operate a daily service out of YVR-Vancouver too using a B788 with also a 1620 arrival into ICN and departure back at 1800. The above mentioned schedule to/from YYZ means that the aircraft sits in ICN for almost 24 hours which seems to be strange of a high value asset. One suggestion here is for AC to look at extending its YYZ-ICN flight into SIN as it should have 5th freedom traffic rights on this sector (considering SQ operated SIN-ICN-YVR in the past).

There are other potential contenders too such as SGN but the main difference is that even though SGN and SIN have the same market size demand to/from YYZ+YVR combined in 2014 (i.e. 50,000 passengers), the pax yield of Canada-SIN is 40% higher!

The schedule for ICN-SIN-ICN would look like this:

AC 061 Dep ICN 1800 Arr SIN 2120
AC 062 Dep SIN 0600 Arr ICN 1330

With this schedule to/from ICN, it allows a scissors hub to be created as both YVR and YYZ will be connected via ICN on a daily basis by AC in both directions.

Etihad upgrades Melbourne to A380

Etihad Airways has officially announced that it will be upgrading one of its two daily Abu Dhabi-Melbourne nonstop flights to an Airbus A380 effective 01JUN16. Currently, both flights are flown using a 3 class B777-300ER exclusively.

The extra capacity comes on the heels of EY's renewed aggressive focus on the Kangaroo route as it seeks to poach away higher number of premium class passengers bound from EU/UK to MEL with their flagship A380 product.

Oman Air orders 20 Boeing 737 MAX

Oman Air has officially announced that it has placed an order with Boeing for 20 Boeing 737MAX units that will be used to eventually fully replace its current Boeing 737-800 fleet in particular.

WY's current B737NG fleet numbers 18 B738s + 5 B739ERs (delivered 2014 onwards).

Comments:

Though the breakdown of this new order is not provided, one hopes at least 10 units would be for the B739MAX as this is the aircraft best suited for all of WY's Indian subcontinent routes + JED/RUH where volumetric demand exists year round. WY's current B739ERs seat 183 pax in a dual class layout (12J + 171Y)

Norwegian orders 19 more Boeing 787-9s

Norwegian Airlines (long haul unit) has officially announced that it has signed a deal with Boeing for an order of 19 new Boeing 787-9s (789) as part of its aggressive long haul expansion plan out of London Gatwick, Copenhagen, Oslo, Barcelona and Stockholm airports going into the next decade.

These B789s are confirmed to be configured to seat 344 passengers in a dual class layout i.e. 35 premium economy + 309 economy. The above mentioned order will henceforth result in the long haul fleet consisting of 8 B788s + 30 B789s once all are delivered gradually between 2017-2020.

The airline also revealed that its long haul flights have now started to make an operating profit and sees the higher capacity B789 with current fuel prices having a real positive impact on their bottom line.

Cathay Pacific suspends Doha

Cathay Pacific has officially announced that it will be suspending its current daily nonstop service to Doha, Qatar effective 14FEB16. The flight is flown daily using an A333. No official reason has been cited by CX for this sudden decision but one should expect its fellow One World partner Qatar Airways to reinstate its second daily DOH-HKG flight in time for the IATA S16 season.

PIA increases Islamabad-Dubai

PIA-Pakistan International Airlines has officially confirmed that in order to be competitive and provide additional capacity on its popular service to Dubai from Islamabad, it shall be increasing its frequencies from the on set of the IATA W15 season.

Currently, PIA operates a daily nonstop flight using an A310 from ISB to DXB, however from 25OCT these shall be increased to double daily using A320s. The new flight's schedule is as follows:

PK 233 Dep ISB 0020 Arr DXB 0255

South African orders 5 A330-300s

South African Airways has officially confirmed that it has negotiated an exchange contract with Airbus for their pending order of 10 A320s which has been converted to 5 A330-300s.

The A333s will all be delivered in 2016 and shall be used to rapidly replace the oldest A343s from the fleet which currently numbers 8 units.

Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/02/safrica-idAFL5N11824H20150902

Comments:

These A333s were bought to rapidly accelerate the cost savings strategy implemented by the carrier since JAN15 which saw BOM and PEK flights suspended to begin with.

One expects the 5 A333s are expected to be utilized in the below mentioned manner:
  • 1 unit to replace daily A340 on JNB-LOS
  • 1 unit to replace daily A332 on JNB-GRU there by in turn, the A332 can be used to replace the A343 on one of the two daily JNB-LHR services which would then make JNB-LHR a dedicated double daily A332 operated flight !
  • 2.5 units to replace daily A346 on JNB-ACC/DKR-IAD
  • 0.5 unit to replace daily A340 on JNB-LAD-JNB
  • One other option also on the table can be for 1 unit to replace the A343 on the daily JNB-PER service (9 hour flight only)
Kindly note that the A333 that SAA has ordered is the A333IGW version which can fly up to 12 hours nonstop with a full payload hence it can easily perform the longest flights in the network which are JNB-LHR and ACC-IAD which are each 11 hours nonstop!

Air India increases London-Delhi

Air India has officially announced today that it will be significantly increasing its presence in the London market by adding a third daily nonstop service from its primary Delhi hub into Heathrow effective 01NOV15.

The new flight will depart as AI 161 from DEL at 0215 arriving into LHR at 0630, departing LHR at 0845 (AI 162) arriving into DEL at 2245 using a B777-200LR on a daily basis.

Comments:

It is unheard of in the airline industry to announce a new long haul nonstop frequency by just giving the market two weeks notice! To fill this new service, AI will be no doubt initiating massive seat sale promos for the month of NOV to not only India but also SE Asia which now connects nicely via DEL in both directions along with KTM. The timing for DEL-LHR AI 161 is excellent for high yielding premium traffic as well as onward trans-atlantic connections with STAR partners UA/AC. However the return sector from LHR to DEL will be a tough sell for a while as AI 162 connects to no onward destination via DEL!

AI needs to seriously look at a 4 weekly nonstop B788 operated service between Manchester and Delhi as the market from MAN to India is bigger than BHX and also offers better yield. This will allow the carrier to have an all round foot print across both the North and Southern UK market segments.

Singapore Airlines suspends Jeddah

Singapore Airlines has officially announced that in order to better utilize its fleet assets and further optimize its entire group's schedule network (including its subsidiary carriers), it has decided to suspend its own operated flights into Jeddah airport and transfer the route over to its low cost long haul unit called Scoot.

Currently, SQ operates a 3 weekly service into JED via DXB-Dubai using a 285 seater A330-300. However effective May 2016, its affiliate Scoot will be taking over the route using a 335 seater all economy class configured Boeing 787-800 and flying SIN-JED-SIN nonstop 3 times per week. It will be primarily targeting the high volume labor and religious traffic originating from Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines via SIN.

Turkish increases Manila to daily nonstop

Currently, TK operates 3 times per week nonstop from Istanbul using a B777-300ER. However from 09FEB16 onwards, frequencies shall be increased to daily nonstop with all the additional 4 flights being flown using the A340-300.

Lufthansa announces San Jose, California

Lufthansa has officially announced that it will be launching new services to San Jose, California aka Silicon Valley in order to cater for the massive need for the city to be directly connected to mainland Europe and one stop to India/Middle East as passengers/corporates who reside in the "Valley area" do not like the commute to SFO airport.

LH will launch the route effective 29APR16 using an A340-300 nonstop operated 5 times per week with the below mentioned schedule:

Days: 1/3/5/6/7

LH 488 Dep FRA 1040 Arr SJC 1340
LH 489 Dep SJC 1520 Arr FRA 1135+1

The above mentioned schedule of LH provides excellent connections in both directions via FRA to all of India.

LH will henceforth be providing San Jose residents its first direct link to mainland Europe and shall be the second carrier after an earlier announcement by British Airways (few months ago) to operate a new long haul nonstop service to the airport from next summer.

Abuja announced by South African Airways

South African Airways continues its high yield focus on regional African growth as part of its turn around strategy identifying key under served markets which have huge growth potential in the long run. Today, the airline announced new 3 weekly nonstop flights from its primary JNB hub to Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.

Services will commence on 26JAN16 using an A330-200 with the below mentioned schedule:

Days: 2/5/7

SA 88 Dep JNB 2320 Arr ABV 0410+1
SA 89 Dep ABV 0845 Arr JNB 1540

The market size demand between ABV and JNB in 2014 was 20,000 passengers but this figure is largely under stated because it does not take into account the large number of passengers who first fly to LOS on a seperate ticket domestically and then buy another seperate ticket LOS-JNB-LOS rather than a thru ticket all the way. The 20,000 figure represents those who purchased tickets using one airline all the way back and forth such as W3 via LOS or ET/KQ via East Africa. Very few pax (if any) fly SAA from JNB to ABV because when they land into LOS at 9pm from JNB they are forced to spend the night in LOS which they want to avoid at all costs !

Alitalia announces Santiago and Mexico City

Alitalia has officially announced that as part of its "turn around" strategy it shall be launching 2 new Latin American destinations from the Summer 2016 season onwards. New services will be operated to Mexico City and Santiago (Chile) flown nonstop from its primary FCO-Rome hub base using Boeing 777-200ERs exclusively.

SCL will be inaugurated from May 2016 where as MEX shall follow suit a month later.

Comments:

SCL does not warrant any AZ online service what so ever and nor does MEX when AZ can easily instead code share Aeromexico (fellow Sky Team member) across the Atlantic.

These flights are in the 13-14 hour flying range time with yields being not so great at all. AZ are far better off using the plane to expand its stronger footprint in USA + launching HKG where O&D demand from both FCO + MXP is very high.

FCO-HKG - 105,000
MXP-HKG - 120,000

In comparison, the O&D demand between Chile and Italy + Europe is very small for a long haul flight of 14 hours to even cover its variable costs! In 2014, the round trip traffic stats were as follows:

CDG - 56,000
FCO - 19,000
MXP - 10,000
MAD - 140,000
AMS - 15,000
LHR - 49,000
FRA - 42,000
BCN - 37,000
ZRH - 12,000
MUC - 12,000

Ethiopian to order 15 Boeing 777-8Xs

Ethiopian Airlines has officially confirmed that after a lengthy time studying whether to order the Boeing 777-8/9X family over the Airbus A350-1000X, it has decided to opt for the smaller Boeing 777-8X (15 units) as the future backbone aircraft to service its long haul operational needs.

ET operates its base out of a high altitude airport (ADD) and as well carries a lot of cargo in both directions especially on its Asia bound flights hence requires the maximum payload possible upon take off in particular out of ADD to ensure full realization of the economic potential that its chosen aircraft provides.

Keeping into account the above, ET decided to order the Boeing 777-8X which is a direct modern replacement of the Boeing 777-200LR. ET cited the aircraft's flying performance range + its on board capacity of 360 passengers is ideal to meet its commercial needs as the larger Boeing 777-900 is a bit too big.

As a result, the airline's future wide body fleet by 2025 shall look like this:

15 Boeing 777-800X
13 Boeing 787-800
14 Airbus A350-900
Total 42 aircraft

Air France to retire all A343s + suspending 5 Asian routes

Air France has today officially released an outline of what its major cost cutting plans are with regards to its long haul route network as the carrier failed to reach an agreement with its pilots unions last week hence was forced by the Board to undertake such a drastic action.

Source: http://www.airfranceklm.com/en/presentation-air-france-restructuring-plan

The main highlights of the restructuring plan are as follows:
  • All A343s to be retired from flying by Winter 2016
  • The A343s shall not be replaced by the B789 in the short term
  • A total of 35 weekly frequencies to be cut from the long haul route from next year onwards
  • Five Asian long haul routes to be suspended
  • Wide body fleet to be reduced from 107 to 93 by end of Winter 2016 season
  • Retirement of its 5 B744s to take place by end of IATA W15 season
Comments:

The 5 Asian routes that I predict will be suspended are as follows:
  • Riyadh (SV already flies daily from JED and RUH to CDG so they can maintain Sky Team presence)
  • Guangzhou (CZ already flies daily from CAN to CDG so they can maintain Sky Team hub to hub presence)
  • Wuhan, China
  • Osaka
  • Bangkok

Kindly note that the suspension of Kuala Lumpur services was already announced in August hence should not be considered as part of the 5 Asian routes that it plans on suspending moving forward.

Gulf Air expands Pakistan services

Gulf Air has officially announced that it has been granted additional bilateral access into Pakistan and shall be taking full advantage of the newly given rights effective 02DEC15.

Lufthansa has officially confirmed that due to poor loads combined with yields, it will be suspending all of its current flights to MCT-Muscat, Oman effective 25OCT15. Currently, LH operates a daily service via Doha to Muscat using an A330-300.

In 2014, 49,000 passengers flew FRA-MCT-FRA point to point along with MUC-MCT-MUC being 34,000! During the EU winter season there is a lot of group traffic from Germany to MCT which now will be taken up by WY, QR and EY primarily.

Emirates has officially announced that it shall be increasing its services to MUC-Munich, Germany effective 01FEB16 as the carrier looks to further expand its already large presence in the German marketplace despite objections raised by Lufthansa. The latest increase on MUC is a result of EK having liberal bilateral access to any 4 German cities it flies to which are FRA, DUS, MUC and HAM.

The new daily flight results in overall frequencies on DXB-MUC being increased from double to triple daily with the new flight being operated by a three class B777-300ER where as the other two are on an A380. The schedule of the new service is as follows:

EK 053 Dep DXB 0320 Arr MUC 0710
EK 054 Dep MUC 1010 Arr DXB 1910

FYI in 2014 alone, the O&D market size demand between DXB and MUC was 310,000 passengers!
